We asked our colleagues how they stay creative and how that helps their businesses prosper. Here is one of the many excellent answers.

“I find that the best way to stay creative is venture outside of your specialty. Move away from what you’re thinking about and do or study something completely different.

For example, many art directors and designers only study books on design and advertising. They get bogged down in coming up with the next great idea. They research web sites and look at examples of what other agencies have done, they also study award winning work in national publications like HOW and Communication Arts. The problem with this kind of thinking is that it narrows possibilities. When we study those annuals or look at what others have done, we are looking at work that could already be a year old. So we are a year behind the curve.

Open your mind to the possibilities outside your specialty and see how they can relate to what you want to do. You will find that your creative juices will flow and some really interesting ideas can come through.”
